IntroductionForum on Street Children - Ethiopia (FSCE) is an indigenous not for profit, non governmental organization established at the end of 1989 by a group of social development professionals working in child-focused organizations. It was established in response to the increase in the number of orphaned and abandoned children in Addis Ababa as a result of the drought and famine of 1984/85.
VisionFSCE's vision is to see the rights of urban disadvantaged children respected by the society. As a child-oriented and right based organization, the mission of FSCE is to work for the respect of the rights of street children, sexually abused and exploited children, physically abused children, and children in conflict with the law.
Strategies Advocacy: FSCE aims to lobby for the proper implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), and child-related aspects of the social service and social welfare policies of the Government of Ethiopia.
Their public awareness raising strategy aims to inform the public of the problem of urban disadvantaged children in general, street children, sexually abused and exploited children in conflict with the law and child labour through workshops, seminars, publications, meetings and mainstream media.
Implementing pilot and model projects: FSCE implements community based integrated child focused projects to support low income children, their families and communities with the involvement of all concerned stakeholders.
Information sharing, networking, research and training strategies help FSCE build capacity with government and other NGOs.
Preventive program on Trafficking in Children This program was established in October in 2004 as an extension of working for the respect of the rights of children. The program primarily aims at successful prevention of in country trafficking and reduction of children living on the street.
One project coordinator, one community worker and one police (appointed by Addis Ababa police commission) are carrying out the program. The major strategies of the program are prevention through public awareness campaigns, protection through medical and psychological support. The Addis Ababa police commission also put extra effort into prosecuting the traffickers
Girls Club Program The Formal School Intervention Program is directed towards reducing the high drop-out rate of girl students in two high schools and two junior schools in Addis Ababa and the surrounding areas.
The objectives of the project are to raise awareness among girl students on the dangers of sexual abuse and exploitation, reproductive health and related issues and improve their educational performance through creating conducive and supportive environment in the schools.
The strategy used in the program is the establishment of "Girls clubs" targeting girl students who are on the verge of dropping out of schools.
