Introducion
During the Stop Child Labour Africa tour, a delegation of three representatives from Southern partner organizations will visit the concerned countries to engage in field visits, exchange meetings and workshops with local NGOs and trade unions, government bodies and international organizations involved in children's rights programmes. The tour delegation will consist of representatives from MVF (India), Asaaman (Nepal) and SNE (Morocco).
Background
Syndicat Nationale de l’Enseignement (SNE) is the leading teachers’ union in Morocco. SNE has been active in the fight against child labour since 1998. The project’s objectives are the following:
- To make a contribution to the struggle against child labour by preventing school drop out;
- To decrease the number of families that take their children out of school;
- Awareness-raising of responsible political and administrative officials to fight against child labour through schools;
- To strengthen the capacity of NGOs and government institutions to fight against child labour.
MVF from India has visited the SNE in order to exchange opinions about how to best fight child labour and helped SNE to identify strategies that can be implemented to best address the specific problems in their own context. The union now plays a strategic role in preventing child labour by keeping children in school. As educators they fight child labour to defend the rights of children to learn.
Achievements
The SNE child labour prevention programme started in five primary schools in Fez. With a cadre of enthusiastic teachers and headmasters-supported by the skills of national union leaders-the project is making such a positive impact that it is expected to expand the programme to four other cities.
